A COMEDY (???) OF ERRORS
MISTAKES THAT HAVE COST YOU MONEY!!! We have listed below the long term members of the Memphis City Council. These people, along with the Mayor, are responsible for the situation the City finds itself in now. We intend to list below some of the decisions for which this group bears responsibility. You should then consider whether they need to be replaced at the next municipal election in October 2007. E.C. Jones, District 1, for 10 years Brent Taylor, District 2, for 9 years Tajuan Stout Mitchell, District 3, for 5 years Janet Hooks, District 4, for 13 years Edmund Ford, District 6, for 5 years Barbara Swearengen Holt, District 7, for 10 years Joe Brown, District 8 (Position 1), for 6 years Rickey Peete, District 8 (Position 1), for 9 years Myron Lowery, District 8 (Position 3), for 13 years Tom Marshall, District 9 (Position 2), for 18 years Jack Sammons, District 9 (Position 3), for 5 years (total 13 years on council) COOK CONVENTION CENTER Why is it that the City cannot build anything within a fixed set figure? Again and again they run over budget. Some say they do it on purpose because they want the project to include more than they can initially get funded so they have the architects design a bare bones project to get it within the initial budget figures knowing all along that they will add the desired features later on. The contractors know this in advance and bid low and then get up and catch up when the change orders come along later. Others say that it is politicians doing what they do worse, spending taxpayers money without strict controls. Take your pick but here is the result for the Cook Convention Center. • Original completion date, May 2001. Actual completion date December 2002 • Project ballooned from $76 million to $92 million • City Council approved a new city hotel-motel tax to fund the overrun in cost PENSION RESOLUTION FOR ELECTED AND APPOINTED CITY OFFICIALS This resolution passed in January of 2001 is a multimillion dollar mistake that can be laid directly at the door of the Mayor and the City Council. Tom Marshall was quoted in the Commercial Appeal saying “ The change is designed to attract top-quality candidates for elected and appointed posts”. The Mayor was quoted in the Commercial Appeal saying “ In an effort to be competitive and be able to attract and retain high-caliber personnel, government – like private sector – must increase its benefits plans”. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED? • Roland McElrath, the finance and administration director, resigned to take a job as the school system’s associate superintendent of business operation at $116,000 per year. He will immediately start receiving $32,000 per year under the January 2001 pension resolution. • Mark Brown, the City Treasurer, retired under this plan and took a job as Bartlett’s finance director. • Danny Wray, the city’s comptroller, also retired under this plan and took a job as controller for the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce. And on an on. We do not know the final damage yet but it is in the millions and millions of dollars just due to the Mayor's and the City Council’s mistakes and lies. WHO VOTED FOR IT. Jones, Mitchell, Hooks, Ford, Holt, Brown, Peete, Lowery, Marshall and Sammons. | HOW QUALIFIED IS OUR CITY COUNCIL? | MISTAKES THAT HAVE COST YOU MONEY | | Return Home | TODAYS NEWS AND MAIL | MEMPHIS CITY GOVERNMENT NEWS | MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL NEWS | MLG&W NEWS | SHELBY COUNTY GOVERNMENT | CONTACT US | FAQ Page | MEMPHIS BRIDGE | |
